For newcomers in industries such as oil, gas or the wind industry, basic safety training is mandatory before starting a new position. Here is an introduction to what basic safety is all about.
If you are new to industries or businesses that operate in areas that expose personnel to hazardous operations, basic safety training is your foundation for a safe work environment.
In basic safety training, delegates will generally be introduced to all the essential knowledge that will keep them safe at work. First aid, fire and firefighting, emergency communication and other general themes are subjects typically taught in basic safety training.
Basic safety training is often workplace or industry specific. This means delegates are trained in scenarios and environments that resemble the ones they will be working in every day. In many cases, basic safety training also incorporates tools and equipment found on the work site. For this reason, basic safety training is often a combination of both theory and practical.
RelyOn Nutec offers a range of basic training courses that meet most industry standards. To get a basic safety training certificate, you first have to find the exact course that will fit your needs and industry requirements. For example, if you work in the maritime sector, you will need STCW basic training. For workers in the oil and gas industry, the basic safety course has to be OPITO approved.
Depending on the actual course, you can expect the training to last anything from one to five days. The final exam can either be a written or oral exam. It may also require the use of safety equipment or other tools.
The basic safety certificate can be in the form of a physical card or paper. But many safety certificates are now digital, so creating an online profile at the course supplier or other organisations might be expected.
Many safety certificates are only valid for a specified period. Within that period the certificate must be re-issued, or it will automatically expire by the end of the period. Safety certificates commonly expire after two to four years.
A BOSIET (Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training) course, which is a basic safety course in the oil and gas industry, expires after four years. So within four years, certificate holders will have to take a refresher course. In this case, the refresher course is called FOET (Further Offshore Emergency Training).
Refreshing a safety certificate is not only a formal process. In the case of FOET, delegates are not just repeating the curriculum they already know. More advanced safety procedures are added to their skillset, too.
STCW is another type of industry-specific basic safety training. The acronym stands for Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers. It is a standard for how personnel working at sea are trained in basic safety.

RelyOn Nutec offers STCW training all over the world: in the US, Canada, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Germany, Trinidad and Tobago, Nigeria, and the UK.
