HOIT | Helideck Operations Initial Training

The Helideck Operations is a course that provides delegates with fundamental knowledge about the role of Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO) and Helideck Assistant (HDA).

What is The Helideck Operations Initial Training?

This is a course for those who wish to become an offshore Helideck Landing Officer (HLO) or helideck assistant (HDA).

Helicopters are a vital part of the lifeline for offshore installations. They supply personnel, equipment, and many other essentials for the multiple responsibilities aboard the offshore facility.

Getting the helicopters to safely land and take-off is the responsibility of the HLO.

The training equips delegates to take on the many responsibilities of the HLO. Communication, maintaining an operational helideck, weather assessment, passenger safety, cargo just to mention a few of the topics.

An approximate ratio of 60% theory to 40% practical is the norm for this training program.

As a minimum prerequisite, delegates must complete an IATA, HCA, CAA or state aviation approved dangerous goods awareness training course beforehand. All delegates must have valid medical.

Once the course has been completed the certificate does not expire.

It is the installation, MODU or vessel duty holder’s is responsibility to ensure delegates also conduct additional on-site training before being appointed to the HLO or HDA role.

Who is the target group for Helideck Operations?

The target group for Helideck Operations programme is personnel who are to be appointed to the role of HLO and/or HDA.

Further training may be needed before the HLO or HDA are appointed. e.g. radio operator’s certificate of competence (HLO only), helicopter refueling (where required) and meteorological/weather reporting training (where required by duty holder).
