What is DMA?

The Danish Maritime Authority is a part of the Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs.  A certain number of crewmembers are required on board a ship. As the responsible authority, the Danish Maritime Authority determines the number of crew members and issues so-called safe manning documents.

What does it mean to be DMA certified?

The Danish Maritime Authority:

  • Obligations under the STCW
  • Certificates of competency and certificates of proficiency
  • Maritime courses on, for example, radio, maritime safety, simulator training and tanker safety
  • Training programmes for yachtsmen
  • Training programme for commercial divers
  • Mandatory courses in medical care at sea

What does DMA approved mean?

The DMA shall approve and verify, through audits on the basis of the supplier’s quality system, that the training programme is carried out in accordance with the objectives and goals as well as other provisions laid down for the relevant training programme.

DMA approved courses

All seafarers required to hold a certificate of competency, are required to complete Basic Safety Training:

  • Personal Survival Techniques (STCW Code – Table A-VI/1-1);
  • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (STCW Code – Table A-VI/1-2);
  • Elementary First Aid (STCW Code – Table A-VI/1-3);
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (STCW Code - Table A- VI/1-4).
