PSC - Proficiency in Survival Craft (HOUSTM-372)

Objective

On meeting the minimum standard of competence in Proficiency in Survival Craft, the trainee will be able to operate life-saving appliances and take charge of a survival craft or rescue boat during and after launch. The trainee will also be able to operate a survival craft engine and manage survivors and survival craft after abandoning ship. Trainees will know the correct use of all locating devices, including communication and signaling apparatus and pyrotechnics, how to apply first aid to survivors, and the actions to take to preserve the lives of those in their charge.

Target Group

Any applicant who has successfully completed your Proficiency in Survival Craft (HOUSTM-372) course will satisfy the Lifeboatman training, practical demonstration, and written examination requirements of 46 CFR 12.407(b)(3) for endorsement as Lifeboatman; AND the Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats Other Than Fast Rescue Boats (PSC) standards of competence required by 46 CFR 12.613; AND the Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats Other Than Fast Rescue Boats (PSC) standards of competence required by Section A-VI/2 and Table A-VI/2-1 of the STCW Code, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 01-24 Tasks I.I.A, 1.2.A, 1.3.A, 1.3.B, 1.3.C, 1.3.D, 1.4.A, 1.4.C, 1.5.A, 1.6.A, 1.8.A, 1.9.A, 2.1.A, 3.1.A, 3.1.B, 3.2.A, 3.3.A, 3.4.A, 3.5.A, 3.5.B, 3.6.A, 3.7.A, 3.8.A, 4.1.A, 4.1.B, and 4.2.A; AND the Survival Suit and Survival Craft training requirements of 46 CFR 11.470(b)(2)(ii), 11.470(h)(2)(i), 1 l .472(a)(2)(ii), and l 1.474(a)(2)(ii).

The sea service requirements of 46 CFR 12.407(b)(2) for endorsement as Lifeboatman must be met and are not part of this approval.

Prerequisites

If an individual solely requires a USCG PSC approved training, no prerequisites exist. If a person requires an STCW endorsement, a completed USCG/STCW Basic Training program is required.

The Code of Federal Regulations 46 CFR 10.403(a)(3) requires training to be administered entirely in the English language unless specifically approved to be presented in another language.

Students must be able to read and write in English to take the written exam and successfully complete the course.

Examination

To successfully complete this course, each candidate must obtain a grade percentage of not less than 70% on a written examination. In addition to the written test, the candidate must successfully complete all performance criteria.

46 CFR 10.403(a)(4) requires a written examination. Course Instructors are not permitted to assist with taking written exams.
