Objective

After the course, participants should be able to demonstrate competence as outlined in STCW Code Table A-VI/4-1. Participants should be able to provide immediate first aid in the event of an accident or illness on board.

Target Group

Requirements for seafarers providing medical first aid on board.

Prerequisites

Course participants must have completed a basic course in medical first aid according to Table A-VI/4-1 prior to participating in this course.

Examination

Written examination.
Passed exam is valid for 60 months.

Course Contents

The course contains theoretical preparatory work on e-learning, which must be completed before attending the course centre.

- Transport/immobilization
- Bandaging
- Use of the contents of a medical kit
- Transportation of hazardous materials
- Poisonings
- Recognizing symptoms and clinical effects

- Making detailed observations of the patient
- Spinal injuries
- Symptoms, treatment
- Burns, scalds, effects of heat and cold, and electrical injuries
- Treatment of burns, scalds, effects of heat and cold, and electrical injuries
- Closed fractures, sprains, and muscle injuries
- Treatment of fractures, sprains, and muscle injuries
- Medical advice over the radio
- Pharmacology
- Cardiac arrest, drowning, and choking
