STCW Combined Boat Training Basic

Objective

To give the delegates knowledge and skills needed to safely crew survival vessels. After completion of the course, the delegate will meet the qualification requirements in accordance with the STCW Code Table A-VI/2-1 and Table A-VI/2-2

Target Group

Persons to be included as the ships operating crew who must operate liferafts, lifeboats and man-over-board boats.
Crew members on board ships who may function as FRB crew.

Prerequisites

Before admission to the course the student must
- Be of at least 18 years of age,
- Have acquired 6 months of service in seagoing merchant vessels with a gross tonnage of 20 or more and
- Be in possession of valid health certificate for seafarers.
The participant must have and bring valid maritime health certificate. Officers, able-bodied seaman and mechanics must bring valid examination certificate. Able-bodied seamen must be able to document 6 month sea going experience.
Note: Persons who do not pre-course has reached the required time of service in seagoing merchant vessels will be permitted to attend the course but can not obtain certificate of competence before sufficient service is achieved.

Examination

None, but all course must be completed with satisfaction for handing out certificate.

Course Contents

Operation and construction of:
- Liferafts
- Lifeboats
- Man-over-board boats
- Life saving appliances
Life-saving first aid, haemorrhage, shock and hypothermia.
Delegates will undergo practical and theoretical training in the following subjects
Construction and outfit of FRBs and individual items of their equipment
Particular characteristics and facilities of FRBs
Safety precautions during launch and recovery of an FRB
Capsizing and procedures for righting a capsized FRB
How to handle and FRB in prevailing and adverse weather and sea conditions
Navigational and safety equipment available in an FRB
Search patterns and environmental factors affecting their execution
Assessment of the readiness of FRBs and related equipment for immediate use
Knowledge of the maintenance, emergency repairs, normal inflation and deflation of
buoyancy compartments of inflated FRBs
Methods of starting and operating an FRB engine and its accessories
Manage injured persons, including the control of bleeding and shock
