Able Seaman (40-hours) (HOUSTM-01)
Objective
The course covers the knowledge and skill elements required to perform the duties of a certificated Able Seaman.
Target Group
Any applicant who has successfully completed your Able Seaman (HOUSTM-1) course, and presents your Certificate of Training within one year of the completion of training, will satisfy:
- The knowledge and written examination requirements of 46 CFR
12.405 for any national Able Seaman endorsement; AND
- The Marlinespike Seamanship demonstration of ability
requirements of 46 CFR 12.405(c) for any national Able Seaman
endorsement.
- This course does not meet any written or practical examination
requirements for Lifeboatman.
Prerequisites
Ability to read and speak in English.
Examination
The candidate will be required to score a minimum competency of 70% on a written exam.
Course Contents
This 5 day (40 hours) course references STCW Code Table A-II/5
Keep a proper look-out
Steer the ship by compass and comply with helm orders
Contribute to the monitoring and controlling of a safe watch
Support mooring and anchoring operations
Operate cargo and stores equipment
Splice and tie line
Practice marlinespike seamanship
Perform shipboard maintenance and repair
Respond to emergencies
Apply first aid
Follow fuel transfer procedures and prevent pollution
Follow health and safety procedures
