Emergency and crisis management 15 credits

Objective

This module is run in cooperation by RelyOn Nutec AS and the Western Norway University of Applied Science. It provides students with the basic theories within emergency and crisis management. The module looks at emergency and crisis management both from a leadership and organisational standpoint, as well as looking at individual reactions to crisis and how to deal with these.

Upon completion of the module, students should be able to complete an analysis of emergencies, and prepare an emergency plan for their own organisation.

On the basis og analysis and context, the students should be able to apply their knowledge about adequate leadership and take care of people affected by a crisis

Target Group

The module is aimed at persons with a role, or who want to develop their skills, within emergency and crisis management.
Upon completion the student receives 15 study points which can be incorporated into a bachelor.

Prerequisites

In order to qualify for the course, students need a certificate of General Study Competence from a Norwegian high school.
However, prior competence within the field will be evaluated as a valid criteria for admission.

Examination

Students will hand in a folder which contains two parts, as well as take an exam at home. You have to pass Part 1 and 2 in order to take the exam. The home exam is taken individually.

Course Contents

The module is theme-based with the following main themes:

Basic concepts, models and theory within the field og emergency and crisis management.

Central tasks and functions for leadership within different organisational and leadership perspectives.

Organising emergency and crisis management within different contexts and situations.

How individuals react to a crisis.

The last gathering will mainly focus on practical exercises in an emergency response center.
It will be mandatory to complete parts of these.

Between gatherings, students should prepare written work which will be handed in for evaluation:
Part 1: Written work after the first gathering (in groups)
Part 2: Exercise in preparing an evaluation report following the second gathering (and the third).
