STCW Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats

Objective

Upon successful completion of all training components, in accordance with the Training Standard, trainees will receive a Transport Canada Training Certificate that is valid for five (5) years.

Prerequisites

A person must be of at least 16 years of age to take the FRB course.

A person must hold a training certificate in Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PSC) (or equivalent under subsection 2.2 of chapter 2 of TP4957) to take this course.

All program information, written courseware and classroom presentations, will be conducted in English.


ITEMS REQUIRED FOR TRAINING:

- When checking in for training, please have your GOVERNMENT ISSUED PHOTO ID with you (ie: Passport or Drivers Licences, etc.)
- Shorts, T-Shirt, and Socks for pool exercises
- Towels, shower facilities on site
- Lock for locker
- A change of clothes for Sea Day (in the winter bring warm clothes such as a sweatshirt and sweatpants)

PLEASE NOTE: Certificates CANNOT be issued unless valid Government issued ID has been presented on Day 1 of training for all RONC courses, including OPITO approved training.

Course activities will involve various physical activities.

Course Contents

On meeting the minimum standard of competence in fast rescue crafts, a trainee will be competent to handle and take charge of such boats during or after launching in adverse weather and sea conditions. They will be able to operate a fast rescue boat engine. A trainee will know how to properly right a capsized fast rescue boat.
Trainees will know the correct use of all locating devices, including communication, navigation and signaling equipment between the rescue boat and a helicopter and the ship; and how to carry out search patterns.


This course meets the requirements of Table A-VI/2-2 of the STCW Convention Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats as well as the requirements of TP 4957 MED Training Courses Section 14 Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats (FRC).

To enable course participants to learn about, understand and become proficient in:
1) the construction and outfit of fast rescue boats and individual items of their equipment;
2) particular characteristics and facilities of fast rescue boats;
3) taking safety precautions during launch and recovery of a fast rescue boat;
4) properly righting a capsized fast rescue boat;
5) properly handling a fast rescue boat in prevailing adverse weather and sea conditions;
6) the navigational and safety equipment in a fast rescue boat;
7) search patterns and environmental factors affecting their execution;
8) assessing the readiness of fast rescue boats and related equipment for immediate use;
9) the maintenance, emergency repairs, normal inflating and deflation of buoyancy compartments of inflated fast rescue boats;
10) properly starting and operating a fast rescue boat engine and its accessories.
