OPITO Banksman and Slinger Initial Training with Sparrows
Objective
The aim of this course is to ensure candidates entering the workforce to carry out banksman and slinger duties have the knowledge and skills to carry out the role safely and competently. The initial course allows delegates to demonstrate basic banksman and slinger skills following instruction and demonstration from training staff. The course aims to prepare delegates for the next stage of the progression path to becoming a competent banksman and slinger and be able to complete stage 2, supervised workplace experience.
Target Group
The course is for personnel wishing to become competent in the banksman and slinger role. It is suited to those without previous experience looking for an entry role in offshore oil and gas.
Examination
OPITO accredited Banksman and Slinger Initial Training certificate is awarded on successful completion of the course. Candidates then receive their logbook for stage 2 to carry out workplace experience under supervision. Once that is completed they can progress to the stage 3 assessment. The certification is valid for two years. If the stage 2 logbook and stage 3 assessment are not successfully completed during this time, the candidate will need to undertake the three-day stage 1 course again.
Course Contents
Candidates will receive training with a mix of theoretical and practical elements, practical exercises will be assessed on an ongoing basis and a theoretical exam is conducted at the end of the course. Knowledge • Relevant legislation and personal responsibilities • Safe systems of work – permits, procedures etc • Risk assessment, lifting plans and controls • Slinging principles and terminology • Crane operating principles and dynamic factors • Conflicting activities and environmental factors • Manual handling. Practical • Safe use of equipment • Rigging loft management control • Equipment pre and post use inspection • Equipment identification and selection • Hand signals and use of radios • Weight identification and estimation • Lifting, placing and disconnecting loads • Role and duties of designated banksman and slinger.
