Basic Training Revalidation (HOUSTM-718)

Objective

Any applicant who has successfully completed your Basic Training Revalidation HOUSTM-718) course will satisfy: The Basic Training continued standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.302(d) and 12.602(d) for mariners who have previously held a Basic Training endorsement under STCW Code Section A-VI/1, PROVIDED that the mariner has at least 1 year of sea service within the last 5 years; STCW Code Section A-VI/1 and Tables A-VI/1-1 an 1-2, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 08-14(Ch-1) Tasks 1.14.B, 1.14.D, 1.14.E, 1.14.F, 1.14.G, 3.7.A, 3.8.A, 3.8.B, 3.8.C, and 3.8.D.

Eligible Maritime Personnel

Prerequisites

To be eligible to take this course, the participant must have a minimum of one year of sea service within the last 5 years and hold a Basic Training endorsement under STCW code. Participant must provide evidence of maintaining the standard of competence for Basic Firefighting and Personal Survival Techniques.

The Code of Federal Regulations 46 CFR 10.403(a)(3) requires training to be administered entirely in the English language unless specifically approved to be presented in another language.

Examination

There is no written assessment. The delegate must successfully perform all practical exercises to pass the course.

To demonstrate competence in Personal Survival Techniques, the delegate must be able to:
- Don and use an immersion suit
- Safely jump from a height into the water
- Right an inverted life raft while wearing a lifejacket
- Swim while wearing a lifejacket
- Keep afloat without a lifejacket

To demonstrate competence in Basic Firefighting training, the delegate must be able to:
- Use various types of portable fire extinguishers
- Extinguish smaller fires, i.e., electrical, oil and/or propane
- Extinguish extensive fires with water using various nozzles
- Extinguish fires with foam, powder or other chemical agent
- Firefight in a smoke filled enclosure wearing an SCBA
- Extinguish a simulated engine room fire
- Extinguish an oil fire

Course Contents

The topics covered during this course for Personal Survival Techniques are:
- donning a lifejacket
- boarding a liferaft from the ship while wearing a lifejacket
- taking initial actions on boarding a lifeboat to enhance chance of survival
- streaming a lifeboat drogue or sea anchor
- operating survival craft equipment
- operating location devices, including radio equipment

The topics covered during this course for Firefighting are:
- don bunker gear
- extinguish a fire using a dry chemical extinguisher
- use foam to extinguish a fire
- extinguish a fire using a CO2 extinguisher
- extinguish a broken flange fire using high velocity fog
- extinguish an engineroom fire wearing an SCBA
- making a rescue in a zero visibility space
