The challenge
When offshore drilling companies Ensco and Rowan merged in early 2019 (creating EnscoRowan, now Valaris) the company faced a big decision as to how they were going to continue to manage their training and licensing needs.
The main question was whether to continue managing training and licensing support for Rowan Legacy employees in-house or to outsource it to RelyOn Nutec, as was the case for Ensco Legacy employees. The newly formed company sought a seamless solution that would reduce administrative work, be cost efficient and consistent throughout the rig fleet globally.
The solution
EnscoRowan (Valaris) chose us to manage all their employees with regard to training management services (TMS), regardless of which company the employee had previously worked under (ie, Ensco Legacy or Rowan Legacy).
The decision was made to take training management out of human resources in order to build a consistent approach to training and licencing, and to deliver it in one system.
We finalised contract negotiations in April of 2019, making us the first vendor to work with the newly established company (note: we’d been working with both companies individually before this merger).
We were given access to all EnscoRowan (Valaris) rigs and their personnel files in order to support TMS for all employees, globally.
All EnscoRowan-owned training, delivered in-house, was kept in-house (i.e., company specific CBT training, new hire induction training, Well Control Training, etc).
From there, we mapped training and certification gaps based on EnscoRowan’s (Valaris’s) matrix requirements. We then looked at the trainings and services which had been provided to Ensco prior to the merger and modified them accordingly, to incorporate Rowan Legacy vessels, personnel and processes.
It was essential for us to engage EnscoRowan’s (Valaris’s) stakeholders in order for our project to be successful. The success factors included a number of important meetings which took place with human resources, operations, rig managers, IT and international coordinators.
We recruited two ex-employees from the merged companies, and with their knowledge of former company processes, they played a vital role in helping us to expedite licensing processes, integrate training procedures and close training gaps.
Our TMS team supports both training, marine licensing and administration globally for EnscoRowan (Valaris). As part of this partnership, the TMS team manages training certificates, competence assessment documentation, training gap reporting, course bookings, and travel requirements to provide single joining instructions and streamline invoicing practices.
Results
- Costs reduced in head count, spend, vendor and contract management.
- Training needs identified proactively and staff trained quickly and easily.
- High compliance via proactive training gap closures.
- Valaris is free to focus on other important areas of their business.
