STCW Security Awareness with Security Duties

Objective

Upon successful completion of all training components, in accordance with the Training Standard, trainees will receive a Transport Canada Training Certificate.

Course Contents

The two day course (12.5 hrs) is intended to provide the knowledge required for seafarers with designated security duties in connection with a Ship/Vessel Security Plan (SSP) to perform their duties in accordance with SOLAS, ISPS, the Marine Transportation Security Act and the Marine Transportation Security Regulations and for all prospective seafarers before being assigned any shipboard duties with security responsibilities. This course meets the requirements of Chapter XI-2 of SOLAS 74 as amended, the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code and Section A-VI/6-2 of the STCW Code applicable to all SOLAS vessels, the Marine Transportation Security Regulations The aims and objectives of the Vessel Personnel With Security Responsibilities (VPWSR) training is to ensure those who successfully complete this course achieve the required standard of competence enabling them to be able to demonstrate knowledge to undertake the duties assigned to them under the Ship/Vessel Security Plan. This knowledge shall include, but is not limited to: 1.Knowledge of current security threats and patterns. 2.Recognition and detection of weapons, dangerous substances and devices. 3.Recognition, on a non-discriminatory basis, of characteristics and behavioral patterns of persons who are likely to threaten security. 4.Techniques used to circumvent security measures. 5.Crowd management and control techniques. 6.Security related communications. 7.Knowledge of emergency procedures and contingency plans. 8.Operation of security equipment and systems. 9.Testing, calibration and at-sea maintenance of security equipment and systems. 10.Inspection, control and monitoring techniques. 11.Methods of physical searches of persons, personal effects, baggage, cargo and ship stores. The following are the core competencies to be demonstrated by trainees: 1.Maintain the conditions set out in a Ship/Vessel Security Plan 2.Recognition of security risks and threats. 3.Undertake regular inspections of the ship/vessel. 4.Proper usage of security equipment and systems, if any. Detailed specifications of minimum standard of competence in Security Awareness Training for Seafarers with Designated Security Duties as detailed in Table A¿VI/6-2 of the applicable STCW Code are contained at Appendix A.
