Sparrows Marine Stage 3 Crane Operator Assessment

Objective

The aim of this assessment is to establish that delegates have the required knowledge, understanding and practical skills to fulfil the role of Marine Stage 3 Crane Operator safely and effectively and is competent to carry out all lifts unsupervised.

Target Group

The Marine Stage 3 Crane Operator Training is designed for experienced crane operators who hold a minimum of Stage 2 certification or equivalent with verifiable evidence of conducting stage 2 crane operations on deck and who have been mentored/coached in dynamic and/or subsea lifting operations.

Examination

Sparrows Marine Stage 3 Crane Operator certification is awarded to delegates on successful completion of both the practical elements and the theoretical assessment. The certification allows delegates to carry out all lifts unsupervised including quayside and over-side lifts to water surface. Certification is valid for two years. Before the certificate expires, delegates must repeat the assessment to ensure continuing competence and to remain certified.

Course Contents

The assessment consists of a mix of theoretical and practical elements which typically takes six hours and is conducted at the worksite to ensure the delegate is competent to carry out all lifts unsupervised. Practical: The crane operator will familiarise the Sparrows assessor with the crane. This enables the assessor to identify any areas of weakness in knowledge of equipment, safety systems and company operating procedures. The candidate will then undertake a series of lifts at the Assessors discretion to demonstrate his/her understanding of and ability to: • Plan the crane operation in accordance with specific company guidelines/procedures • Assess the conditions of the work area • Establish and comply with a system of communication • Carry out all pre-start and pre-operational checks • Maintain control of the crane whilst operating unloaded and with load on hook • Operate the crane in a safe manner, displaying awareness of any conflicting activity (including subsea lifting operations and/or launch and recovery of ROV) • Demonstrate the ability to remove lateral and longitudinal swing from the load • Demonstrate the ability to configure the crane to reflect different operating criteria • Demonstrate the ability to alleviate dynamic loading effects • Follow instructions given by the banksman through hand signals and radio contact • Carry out appropriate shutdown procedures during normal operations. Theoretical: On completion of all practical elements, the Assessor will administer a theoretical questionnaire to further identify the extent of the candidate’s underpinning knowledge in relation to crane operations. No tuition or reference books are allowed to be used for this part of the assessment process. The minimum requirement for achievement of the examination is set at 80%.
