OPITO LOLER Competent Person Assessment
Objective
The aim of this assessment is to verify that the candidate has the required underpinning knowledge, understanding and practical skills to carry out the role of an LCP (as required by LOLER regulations).
Target Group
The LOLER Competent Person (LCP) assessment is intended for personnel who have been recommended to take on the LCP role by their sponsoring company. The LCP plans or approves all lifting operations in the workplace to ensure that lifting operations comply both with LOLER Regulations and company procedures. The LCP must have the theoretical knowledge of regulations/best practice relevant to lifting operations and operational experience to select the appropriate lifting equipment to be used. They plan the lifting operation, determine suitable levels of supervision for the lifting operation and are able to manage/control the contents of the rigging loft.
Examination
An OPITO approved certificate will be issued upon successful achievement which is valid for two years.
Course Contents
The LCP assessment will benchmark candidates using specified performance criteria in the OPITO standard to measure their ability to plan or approve lifting operations within the workplace. Using knowledge of legislation to ensure that the lifting operations are in compliance with LOLER regulations, the LCP assessment is a mix of theoretical examinations and practical assessments. To achieve this assessment, candidates must demonstrate: • Knowledge of relevant regulations and the SSOWs which affect the planning and implementation of lifting operations • Ability to coach and mentor lifting personnel under their supervision • Ability to supervise and control all aspects of lifting operations • Ability to assess loads in terms of their weight, centre of gravity and security • Knowledge in the selection of appropriate lifting appliances and accessories to ensure the load is lifted within the Safe Working Load (SWL) of the lifting equipment • Capability to plan a lifting operation and prepare a risk assessment • Ability to identify the potential hazards for each of the tasks forming the individual stages of the lifting operation • Ability to apply the control measures to reduce these potential hazards.
