HSE Culture and Leadership: Leadership and change


Delegates will be introduced to the different areas of leadership and economy related to HSE. The study module provides the student with knowledge about the interaction between the individual, organisation and society, and how this can affect the HSE culture in an organisation.

Upon completion delegates should be able to evaluate and implement HSE strategies in their own organisation.

Target Group

This study module is aimed at people in a position, or who want to develop their skills, within HSE. Upon completion, the course qualifies for 15 credits.


It is a prerequisite that all applicants satisfies the genaral admission requirements for higher education, or have their prior learning evaluated by the Western Norway University of Applied Science.

In order to have your prior learning assessed, an application containing the necessary information needs to be submitted to the Western Norway University of Applied Science.


The evaluation of the course is split between a written project review and a written exam. The project can be undertaken individually or in a group. Tutorial support will be offered on the project. Each delegate will get a final grade, where the exam weighs 60 %.

Course Contents

The module covers the following themes:

Leadership: management of good routines and implementing necessary change, leadership styles and management techniques, professionalisation of the HSE work.

Economy: cost-benfit analysis, profitability, use of resources.

Legislation and agreements: HSE legislation and regulations.

Interaction:Individual, organisation and society in HSE culture, HSE work in organisational and economical context, trust and ethics as a prerequisite for HSE improvements.

Methods of learning:
In this module, the methods of working will vary between lectures, group work, presentations, discussions and exchange of experience.

The program will be IT-supported so that the contact between students and teachers can be maintained between all the gatherings.
