Preparatory Well Control

Objective

The 3-day preparatory course aims to consolidate and strengthen the participants’ fundamental understanding of well control in relation to rig equipment and well control operations. It is designed to precede either an IWCF or IADC certified Introductory Level Well Control course with a focus on remedial mathematics and problem-solving strategies for well control calculations.

Target Group

The training is designed for derrickmen, roughnecks, floorhands, and other members of the drill crew who may benefit from additional support in the lead up to their participation in an IWCF or IADC certified drilling well control course for the first time.

Examination

There is an informal pre-course assessment on the first day to help the instructor gauge the knowledge base of each participant. There is also a final assessment at the end of the course, conducted under formal exam conditions, to measure the class learning curve and to expose participants to supervised exam conditions. Completion of the course and assessments will result in an Aberdeen Drilling School certificate of participation which is valid for life and does not need to be repeated or renewed.

Course Contents

This 3-day instructor-led programme is delivered flexibly through a series of modular lectures supported by videos and animations and self-study exercises. Real life case studies are discussed and familiarisation with drilling simulation software is included to help the participants understand how well control training relates to live well operations.
