API is the only national trade association representing all facets of the natural gas and oil industry in the US. It represents around 650 corporations involved in production, refinement, distribution, and many other aspects of the petroleum industry. The association describes its mission as to promote safety across the industry globally and to influence public policy in support of a strong, viable US oil and gas industry.
API was formed in 1919 as a standards-setting organisation. In its first 100 years, API has developed more than 700 standards to enhance operational and environmental safety, efficiency and sustainability.
Although their focus is primarily domestic, in recent years their work has expanded to include a growing international dimension, and today API is recognised around the world for its broad range of programmes.
Each year API works with leading industry subject-matter experts to maintain their inventory of over 600 standards and recommended practices. API standards are designed to assist industry professionals improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of their operations, comply with legislative and regulatory requirements, safeguard health, and protect the environment.
