Offshore Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO)

Objective

Aligns with Oil Producing Industry Training Organization (OPITO) criteria and meets training requirements for Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO) and Helicopter Deck Assistants (HDA). The course covers duties of the HLO and HDA such as proper communication with helicopters, identifying and locating hazards on helideck, helideck checks, passenger control, manifesting, landing and takeoff operations, loading freight and dangerous goods and aircraft crash/fire/rescue training that focuses on emergency response for helicopter emergencies and passenger rescue in the event of a helicopter mishap. Helicopter shut-down and electrical system isolation are covered. Also covered are certain design features of helicopters such as engine compartments, metallurgy (fire characteristics), and onboard emergency equipment. Certified refueling training is available Note: This course does NOT include basic firefighting training. Completion also fulfills Helideck Assistant CBT, 000000001513.

Target Group

Personnel employed in the oil and gas industry who will be performing the duties as HLO/HDA ( Helicopter Landing Officer / Helideck Assistant )

Prerequisites

Preferred certification is multiday firefighting curriculum. The minimum requirement is an 8 hour Basic Incipient Firefighting course.

Examination

Written Exam: 80 % completion required
Practicals: Competent - return to facility under instruction
Not Yet Competent - requires additional training
